BARRATowards the west of the city, the Barra de Tijuca region, featuring Barra Olympic Park, will be the heart of the Olympic Games Rio 2016, with the zone set to host 23 disciplinesOLYMPIC GOLF COURSEThe Olympic Golf Course, located north of Marapendi Lake, will become a public course, training centre and top-level tournament venue after the Games, with the aim of promoting golf in Brazil and South America.PONTALImmortalised in the song Do Leme ao Pontal by legendary Brazilian musician Tim Maia, the picture-postcard location of Pontal will host the start and finish of the road cycling time-trial events, as well as the athletics race walks.RIOCENTROFour existing pavilions at Riocentro, the cityÕs main exhibition and convention centre and the biggest of its kind in Latin America, will host badminton, boxing, table tennis and weightlifting.CARIOCA ARENA 1Situated in Barra Olympic Park, the basketball arena has a metallic covering that reflects sunlight to reduce energy consumption during the day. The court itself has a support system that uses rubber shock absorbers to guarantee the best conditions for athlete performance.CARIOCA ARENA 2Carioca Arena 2, which will host the judo, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling competitions, has a fa•ade inspired by the cityÕs mountainous landscape, and is one of six venues within Barra Olympic Park that will form the Olympic Training Centre after the Games.CARIOCA ARENA 3The stage for fencing and taekwondo, Carioca Arena 3 was built to offer the highest standards of accessibility for athletes and spectators. After the Games, it will become a sport-focused high school for 850 full-time students.FUTURE ARENAThis temporary venue will host handball during the Games, after which it will be dismantled and its parts used to construct four public schools.MARIA LENK AQUATICS CENTRE Named after BrazilÕs first-ever female Olympian, the open-air venue has been renovated and will host three aquatics disciplines. The improvements, which cost USD 5.4 million, include new springboards and hydrotherapy baths.OLYMPIC AQUATICS STADIUMThe main aquatics facility will stage swimming and water polo, and has a natural ventilation system that will keep it cool while reducing energy usage.OLYMPIC TENNIS CENTREThe all-new Olympic Tennis Centre is made up of 16 hard-surface courts Ð 10 for competition and six for training. It includes a permanent centre court, named after BrazilÕs multiple Grand Slam winner Maria Esther Bueno, as well as two other show courts with temporary seating.RIO OLYMPIC ARENARio Olympic Arena is the biggest indoor venue in the city and is used extensively for major sports events, concerts and cultural activities. It will host all 18 gymnastics medal events.RIO OLYMPIC VELODROMETrack cycling will take place in the brand-new velodrome, which will bring top-level sporting events to the city and provide a training centre for high-performance athletes after the Games. OLYMPIC VILLAGEAbout 18,000 people Ð including athletes, coaches and technical staff Ð will stay in the Olympic Village, with the new complex consisting of 3,600 apartments.
