Similarly, the 330ml sleek can has gained greater prominence, with an Austrian co-packer enjoying great success by using this format for a functional beverage that is enriched with branched amino acids and vitamins. But while soft drinks account for the lion’s share of can fillings in Austria and Switzerland, the beer sector has also shown promising growth in recent years. This trend continued in 2015, with beer fillings increasing by 4.1% to 705 million cans. Much of the growth has been attributed to excellent summer weather driving retail sales – compared with the poor weather during the same period in both countries in 2014 – but there is also a growing appreciation for the can among Austrian and Swiss breweries.Salzburg’s Stiegl brewery recently chose to launch its non-alcoholic Freibier in cans, while Viennese brewer Ottakringer released its new Wiener G’mischtes beer in cans in 2015. The Murauer Brewery has also enjoyed success by packaging its beer in 250ml cans for events where glass is usually banned. All these launches underline that brewers see the can as a modern, exciting package, with several breweries – including Swiss brewers Falken, Ramseier and Locher – now investing in their own filling lines.
