NOW, THE GERMAN CAPTAIN IS AIMING TO REGAIN HER FITNESS IN TIME FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES RIO 2016The best moment of my career so far was winning the 2013 European Championships in Sweden Ð it fulfilled a dream of mine. The worst moments of my career have been the injuries that I have unfortunately been suffering. It is very hard to deal with those.ÓIn my opinion, being a good central midfielder means not only focusing on your own game but also being responsible for the connection between the defensive players behind you and the attacking players up front. The focus needs to be on the team as a unit, and the central midfielder must read the game well and help the team in every situation Ð from tackling and shooting to running back and forth and communicating with team-mates.ÓFootball is not as easy as it sometimes seems to be, as many different skills are needed and have to be combined. There are always plenty of possibilities of what can happen next during a game. Nowadays, the athletic aspect is much more important, but at the same time you also need great technical skills. Of course, you must be a team player at all times.ÓThe Olympic Games are a fantastic event. The thought that the world is united by sports is a wonderful one. I have always found it interesting to watch different types of sports and get an overview as well. Representing Germany in Rio would fill me with so much pride; there is nothing better than playing for your country.ÓMy position is central midfield, where it is always about the structure of the team and getting the organisation just right. From the middle of the park, it is also about dictating the rhythm of the game. I would say that all of this is the groundwork of central midfielders; the individual skills come on top of that.ÓThe captain is vital for any team. She or he should be the role model for the other players and needs to represent the team at all times Ð not putting her or his own interests first.ÓI started playing football when I was four years old.
