The Active programme gave young people the chance to try sports such as ice climbing, bandy, parkour and telemark skiing, as well as more unusual activities, including ski ballet Ð a demonstration event at the Olympic Winter Games Albertville 1992 Ð ice stock, which is similar to curling, and jump biathlon, a combination of ski jumping and snowball throwing. At the centre of the action was Sjogg Park Ð an area of Lillehammer devoted to fun activities that included an ice slide, mono-ski run and igloo disco, in addition to being home to the Youth Olympic flame for the duration of the Games. ÒI think everything they have here is great for young people,Ó said local resident Britt Rasch, who took her grandchildren to the park to try out the wide variety of activities. ÒWe have been watching people coming down here every day and they all seem to be having a good time.ÓWith so many fun activities on offer throughout Lillehammer, it was impossible not to.As if the 70 medal events taking place throughout the Lillehammer region werenÕt enough to keep people entertained, visitors to the 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games were also treated to an extensive cultural festival that ran alongside the sports programme.Named after the Lillehammer 2016 mascot, Sjogg, the fun-filled Sjoggfest was the largest festival ever held in the local region and brought together some of NorwayÕs leading creative talent for an extensive programme of free, daily events covering music, film and the arts, as well as inspirational talks and other fun activities. ÒWe are really proud of the extensive Sjoggfest programme,Ó said Eirik H¿yme Rogn, Lillehammer 2016Õs head of culture. ÒWe have 300 different events, including approximately 130 concerts, which is by far the biggest part of Sjoggfest, and most of the performers are under the age of 30. It is important for us to show the best of young Norwegian culture.ÓThe concerts featured a variety of artists Ð including up-and-coming young talents and internationally-renowned acts such as Nico & Vinz, AURORA, Lemaitre, Matoma and Madcon Ð and were held at unique venues throughout downtown Lillehammer, including a SJOGGFEST: SPREADING YOG FUN THROUGHOUT LILLEHAMMERLILLEHAMMER 2016 REVIEW34 OLYMPIC REVIEW
