18 OLYMPIC REVIEW In February, Nigerian table tennis player Segun Toriola made history by booking his place at a seventh Olympic Games after winning the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Africa qualification event in Khartoum (Sudan).ToriolaÕs appearance at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 will mark the first time that an African athlete in any sport has competed at seven Games, while he also joins an elite Òseven clubÓ from the IF which includes table tennis legends Jean-Michel Saive (BEL), Jšrgen Persson (SWE) and Zoran Primorac (CRO).After the competition, the four-time All-African Games champion, who made his Olympic debut at the age of 17 in Barcelona in 1992, said: ÒI am very excited about this achievement, I never thought I could be playing at a seventh Olympic Games in my career. I am honoured that I made history as the first African to achieve this feat.ÓAbove Segun Toriola in action during the Commonwealth Games in 2014NIGERIA’S SEGUN TORIOLA QUALIFIES FOR HISTORIC SEVENTH OLYMPIC GAMESMeeting in Istanbul (Turkey) on 12-13 December, the World Archery Executive Board, chaired by IOC Executive Board Member Uur Erdener, confirmed the IFÕs commitment to good governance by mandating a proactive approach to the IOCÕs new auditing practices, the formation of a remuneration commission and a decision to further increase the amount of administrative documentation available to the public. It was made a constitutional requirement for member associations to follow best practice Ð in governance, anti-doping and sporting activities Ð with the approval of an active member association by-law, agreed in principle at the World Archery Congress 2015. As well as a progress report on phase two of the World Archery Plan, the Executive Board received reports on departmental activities in 2015 and updates from the Olympic Games Rio 2016, and a presentation on the progress of the World Archery Excellence Centre. The Board took a number of important decisions on proposed by-laws, changing rules in the sport from 1 April 2016. It also selected the hosts of seven world championships up until 2020.WORLD ARCHERY EXECUTIVE BOARD IN COMMITMENT TO GOOD GOVERNANCEITTF CROWNS 2015 STAR PLAYERS AT AWARDS NIGHTThe 2015 world champion, Ma Long, and 2015 WomenÕs World Cup winner Liu Shiwen, both of the PeopleÕs Republic of China, were named male and female player of the year respectively at the 2015 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Star Awards. The awards were presented at a ceremony held on 9 December at the P‡tio da GalŽ in Lisbon (Portugal) to celebrate the achievements of athletes and coaches in 2015. Eight prestigious awards were given out during the star-studded evening. The two players of the year were chosen in a public vote in which 60,000 fans from around the world took part, in combination with the views of an expert panel consisting of the ITTF AthletesÕ Commission, the ITTF President Thomas Weikert, and various international media representatives.Below Olympic gold medallist and world champion Ma Long
