A SERIES OF ‘ACTIVE DAYS’ WILL BE HELD THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY TO PROMOTE OLYMPIC VALUESPAVING THE WAY FOR ARGENTINA’S NEXT GENERATION OF ATHLETES The YOG is an elite sports competition that brings together the best athletes in the world in their age category. It provides them with their fi rst taste of the Olympic stage, one that will stay with them forever and represents a vital phase in their training as athletes and development as people. The YOG also provides the host country with an opportunity to excel on the sporting stage. With that goal in mind, ENARD, Argentina’s high performance sports body, teamed up with the country’s NOC and other sporting bodies to launch a wide-ranging programme in January 2014. Designed to uncover talented young athletes and prepare the Argentina team for Buenos Aires 2018, the programme also seeks to train them for possible participation in future editions of the Olympic Games. Some 700,000 Argentinian teenagers born between 2000 and 2003 took part in nationwide tests designed to reveal their sporting abilities. In 2015, phase two of the programme saw 8,000 young athletes attend 27 training camps, with the very best performers in around 30 sports being picked out. Finally, in February 2017, 530 young athletes, 130 coaches and 100 volunteers took part in Campus 2018, a sports and education camp organised by Argentina’s high performance sports centre (CeNARD). The athletes were put through their paces at the training camp and given sport and Olympic values. In addition, BAYOGOC has given youngsters the chance to meet athletes at schools and sports taster sessions, as part of the “Chat with Champions” initiative. In partnership with the Argentinian NOC and the National Federations, a series of “Active Days” will be held throughout the country to promote Olympic values to local people and build interest in the YOG before the Olympic Torch Relay gets under way. Finally, as part of the celebrations of the one-year-to-go milestone before the YOG Buenos Aires 2018, Worldwide TOP Partner and offi cial timekeeper Omega unveiled the countdown clock situated near the Obelisk. All these events and activities will be given coverage on the Olympic Channel as well as on Buenos Aires 2018 and IOC social media platforms using the hashtag #BuenosAires2018, with the aim being to project Olympic values in a dynamic way and inspire youngsters on a broader scale.AboveSport climbing will be on the Olympic programme at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 after making its debut at the YOGLeftLocal schoolchildren have been given the opportunity to try sports such as basketballBUENOS AIRES 2018
