sport, the other three – karate, sport climbing and roller sports – will be a foretaste of the programme for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.The inclusion of these new sports on the YOG programme, and the appearance of new events and competition formats such as BMX freestyle, kiteboarding, futsal and beach handball, serve to highlight the role of the YOG as a testing ground for Olympic innovations. The Learn & Share programme, which has become a regular feature at the YOG, will comprise a range of cultural and educational activities tailored to their respective target audiences (athletes, their entourage and local young people). For example, sports taster sessions in 30 of the sports on the programme will be laid on at the four YOG parks. Youngsters will also be able to try their hand at baseball/softball, frontball (which is based on the traditional Basque sport of pelota, where players use their hand to strike a small ball against a wall) and slackline, which involves walking and balancing along a piece of webbing suspended in the air. Three levels of expertise will be offered for budding athletes: beginners, with supervisors on hand to explain the basics and oversee safety; intermediate, with participants left unsupervised; and advanced, with young athletes from the local area showcasing their talent at selected, high-quality competition venues. In addition, squash and polo, both of which are popular in Argentina, will be showcased as part of the Learn & Share programme, where the respective International Federations will invite young athletes to come and entertain the spectators. These athletes will not form part of the offi cial National Olympic Committee (NOC) delegations. Athletes competing at Buenos Aires 2018 will also be able to take part in workshops designed to raise their awareness of Olympic values, anti-doping regulations, abuse in sport and match-fi xing. Other workshops will give an insight into the latest training techniques (performance, injury prevention, nutrition, etc.) and the skills needed to manage their careers and get the most out of social media. Digital platforms like the Olympic Athletes’ Hub will make material from these workshops available for anyone wishing to fi nd out more about the issues discussed.BelowRoller sports will make their debut on the Olympic programme in Buenos AiresBelow rightA mural of Argentinian Olympic judo gold medallist Paula Pareto52 OLYMPIC REVIEW BUENOS AIRES 2018
