ONE YEAR TO GO BUENOS AIRES 2018The Buenos Aires 2018 Organising Committee (BAYOGOC) has set itself the task of “bringing sport to the population”. This was the objective outlined by BAYOGOC President Gerardo Werthein during the IOC’s Coordination Commission visit to Buenos Aires in July.“Buenos Aires 2018 will have an innovative and modern approach,” he said. “Instead of waiting for young people to come to sport, the Games will aim to bring sport, culture and education to millennials and get them involved through interactive activities. It will be an open event for everyone to enjoy and will have a strong focus on sustainability.”With a view to achieving this goal, the next Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will begin on 6 October 2018, will engage with athletes, local people and youngsters through the “four-parks” concept. Entry to the Green, Urban, Tecnópolis and Youth Olympic parks will be free, and will offer visitors the chance to enjoy a unique experience that combines sporting competitions, educational and cultural activities and sports taster sessions. Thanks to this innovative approach, all the sites will be located close to areas that are popular with the people of Buenos Aires.Young athletes and their entourage will be housed at the Youth Olympic Village in the south of the city, not far from the Youth Olympic Park. Due for completion by early 2018, the Village will be turned into affordable housing after the YOG, creating a tangible legacy in a currently disadvantaged and underdeveloped part of the city. Notably, Buenos Aires 2018 will be the fi rst Games to achieve complete gender parity, with 1,999 men and 1,999 women, aged 15 to 18 and hailing from all over the world, competing at the highest level in their age category across 32 sports. Four new sports will be making their debut on the Olympic stage: sport climbing, dance sport, karate and roller sports. They will join the 28 other sports that featured at the previous edition of the YOG in Nanjing in 2014.
