During the build-up to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, the IOC and UNHCR will launch an exciting campaign as part of their ongoing efforts to help refugees and build a better world through sport.“Become the Light” will target the issue of light poverty by asking members of the public to get active and help earn sustainable lighting solutions for the Mahama refugee camp in Rwanda. Those living in the camp are among 1.2 billion people around the world who suffer from light poverty, meaning they have no access to electric lighting, and that when the sun goes down, their ability to study, work or practise sport is severely limited. This is a particular problem in places close to the equator, such as Rwanda, where daylight typically only lasts 12 hours and darkness may fall as early as 6pm. For children and young people, that has a huge impact on their ability to be physically active or even do their homework. The Become the Light campaign is asking people to link their fi tness tracking devices to a dedicated campaign hub and get active. For every step they take, the IOC will commit to providing sustainable lighting solutions for the Mahama refugee camp.Due to launch on 1 November to coincide with the start of the Olympic Torch Relay, the campaign is backed by a series of inspirational fi lms and will run throughout PyeongChang 2018.
