13 AugustAfter the disappointment of missing out on gold in the 100m butterfly 24 hours earlier, Michael Phelps returned to the pool one final time to bring the curtain down on his illustrious Olympic career. And, to the delight of almost everyone inside the Olympic Aquatics Stadium, it proved to be a golden farewell to the Games, as the 31-year-old teamed up with Ryan Murphy, Cody Miller and Nathan Adrian to win the 4x100m medley relay. The victory gave Phelps his 28th Olympic medal, and 23rd gold, as he underlined his status as the most successful Olympian ever.“This is how I wanted to finish my career,” he said afterwards. “This was the cherry on top of the cake and now I’m looking forward to starting a new chapter.”While Phelps was collecting gold number 23, Puerto Rico was celebrating its first-ever Olympic gold medal, following Mónica Puig’s victory over Germany’s Angelique Kerber in the women’s tennis final.“It’s just amazing,” said the 22-year-old, who competed at the YOG in 2010. “I know my country really appreciates this and I wanted to give it to them.”PicturedMónica Puig reacts to winning Puerto Rico’s first-ever Olympic goldLeftMichael Phelps (near) competes in the men’s 100m butterfly finalDAY8RIO 2016OLYMPIC REVIEW 35
