12 AugustHeading into the evening’s action, the stage was set for Michael Phelps to win his 23rd Olympic gold medal in his final individual event of the Games. But Joseph Schooling hadn’t read the script. The 21-year-old from Singapore stormed to victory in the men’s 100m butterfly, winning the NOC’s first-ever Olympic gold medal. Phelps was left in an unprecedented three-way tie for silver alongside South Africa’s Chad Le Clos and Hungary’s László Cseh.Perhaps the most impressive victory of the evening, however, belonged to Katie Ledecky, who won her fourth gold of the Games with a world record-breaking performance in the women’s 800m freestyle. Defending the title she won in London, the 19-year-old American finished almost 12 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. Great Britain’s track cyclists were also in world record-breaking form, with Bradley Wiggins, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke and Owain Doull combining to beat Australia in a thrilling and tense team pursuit final. “I wanted to go out on top and it was one of the best finals ever,” said Wiggins, who ended his career with a record eighth Olympic cycling medal.
