7 AugustThe full range of emotions that the Olympic Games can elicit was on display on day two, with agony and ecstasy in equal supply. There was jubilation for judoka Majlinda Kelmendi, who became Kosovo’s first-ever Olympic champion by winning the women’s -52kg event, but there were tears for tennis star Novak Djokovic as the world number one was beaten in the first round of the men’s singles event by Argentina’s Juan Martín del Potro. Kelmendi’s victory saw Kosovo become the 100th NOC to win an Olympic gold medal, and the significance was not lost on the emotional 25-year-old.“I have dreamed of this moment for such a long time,” she said. “It means a lot to me and it means a lot to my country.”History was also made at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre, where China’s Wu Minxia became the first diver to win four Olympic gold medals in a single event, as she claimed a fourth consecutive title in the women’s synchronised 3m springboard event alongside new partner Shi Tingmao.DAY2PicturedChina’s Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao in mid-air during the synchronised 3m springboard eventRIO 2016OLYMPIC REVIEW 29
