6 AugustThe feel-good factor following the spectacular Opening Ceremony continued on the opening day of competition as fans basked in Rio’s sunshine on Copacabana Beach – where the men’s cycling road race came to a thrilling conclusion – and the host nation celebrated its first medal of the Games, with Felipe Wu winning silver in the men’s 10m air pistol. In a back-and-forth battle, the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) silver medallist held a 0.2 lead going into the final shot, but was beaten by Vietnam’s Hoàng Xuân Vinh, who secured his country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal.“Winning this gold medal will be a lifelong memory,” said Hoàng. “I’ll never forget this because it is the firstgold medal for Vietnam.”Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini was the first member of the Refugee Olympic Team to compete in Rio, winning her heat in the women’s 100m butterfly just a year after dramatically escaping the conflict in her home country, while fans at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium were also able to cheer a succession of world record-breaking performances. The highlight came from Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú, who smashed the previous world best by over two seconds as she won the women’s 400m individual medley – her first Olympic gold medal in her fourth Games.
