Hailsham offers a taste of NADFASKingston gives support to Coombe’s colourful Romeo & Juliet playNorwich DFAS celebrates Joan’s milestone birthdaySutton Coldfi eld Recorders start at St Peter’sKingston Upon Thames DFAS worked with Coombe Girls’ School, New Malden, to produce banners for their performance of Romeo & Juliet in a local theatre. Drama and art departments worked across year groups to research Mehndi designs and produce linocuts. The designs were printed on to colourful cloth, sewn together by the students. The students were appreciative of the opportunity to work with different groups and to share their work within the school and local community. • Two members of the Society have helped complete a project to convert Red Cross VA personnel cards into a digital archive. One commented: ÒThe more you discover, the more you want to know.Ó Search the archive at www.redcross.org.uk/ww1.After a gap of over ten years, Sutton Coldfi eld DFAS has started a new Church Recording group, which has begun recording at St Peter’s Church, Stonnall, Staffordshire. With support, the group has made an excellent start on the windows, memorials, metalwork and library of the chapel at ease, built in 1823. So far highlights have included a safety-aware climb into the bell and clock tower to watch the turret clock being wound, lifting the carpet in the sanctuary to fi nd an impressive early 19th-century memorial, and discussion and refreshment at a local hostelry. The group meets on Monday mornings; if anyone wishes to join please contact Gill Bellenie on gillbellenie@btinternet.com.The New Societies Team is hoping to instigate a new Society in Hailsham, East Sussex and is looking for local people interested in forming a Steering Committee and/or joining the Society.There will be a free taster lecture at the Hailsham Pavilion on Friday, September 9, where NADFAS-accredited Lecturer Linda Collins takes a tour of 20th-century art with her talk ‘From Wild Beasts to Pickled Sharks’. Sime is known for his ‘Bogey Beasts’; students Victoria Haddock and Rebecca D’Ambrosia selected works in poor condition for their fi nal conservation assignments. The Society funded the materials.Mary Broughton, Trustee at the gallery, said: “The students have done a beautiful job; devoting hours of enthusiasm, skill, love and care on these fascinating pieces which have been expertly cleaned, repaired, stabilised and brought to ‘museum quality’ status.”Below: Students Victoria Haddock and Rebecca DÕAmbrosiaTurners Hill enjoys lecture surpriseMembers of Turners Hill DFAS were surprised when a special guest joined their May lecture on the subject of the ‘World of Shakespeare’. Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench, who lives locally and who has played several Shakespearean roles, mingled with members beforehand and afterwards took time to thank NADFAS-accredited Lecturer Nicole Mezey.
