This marks a continuation of the country’s long-term trend from returnable to one-way beverage packaging and underlines the beverage can’s renaissance within Germany, where it had all but disappeared from retail shelves following the introduction of a deposit system for one-way containers in 2003.The can’s comeback began with the establishment of the DPG (Deutsche Pfandsystem GmbH) in 2005, which created a nationwide deposit and return system for non-refillable beverage containers. Previously, most retailers had delisted cans from their shelves due to the deposit system, but the DPG has helped return the package to stores across the country. In 2015, the last of Germany’s major retailers finally relisted cans on their shelves after a 10-year absence, marking the completion of the can’s impressive revival. Now, consumers are able to purchase beverage cans in all the different retail forms and outlets in Germany. This gradual reintroduction to retail shelves has seen can fillings surge in recent years, with total fillings rising from 2.8bn in 2009 to 4.1bn in 2015. With local consumption of beverage cans also rising 10% in 2015, the appetite for cans within Germany is clearly evident. The country’s soft drinks sector witnessed a 19.4% rise in fillings in 2015, with consumers benefiting from the pricing strategy of leading discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, which both listed more major brands in addition to their private-label ranges. The launch of two new reduced-sugar soft drinks, namely Coca-Cola Life and Fanta Klassik, also helped boost fillings, with both launches backed by large marketing campaigns.GERMANYGERMANY’S LONG-TERM TREND FROM RETURNABLE TO ONE-WAY BEVERAGE PACKAGING CONTINUES, WITH CAN FILLINGS SURGING PAST 4BN IN 2015Source: Industry estimates based on consumptionMARKET SNAPSHOT• The beverage can’s revival in Germany continues, with total fillings surging over 4bn• All major retailers have now relisted cans in their stores• Lower prices and new launches boost soft drinks sectorTOTAL CAN 4.1BNFILLINGS UP 13.5%BEER CAN 2.55BNFILLINGS UP 10.2%SOFT DRINKS CAN A YEAR IN NUMBERS1.55BNFILLINGS UP 19.4%BEER SHARE OF MARKET BY PACK TYPE, 2015 4% Cans 86% Refillable glass 3% Non-refillable glass 7% Non-refillable PETSOFT DRINKS SHARE OF MARKET BY PACK TYPE, 2015 3% Cans 4% Refillable glass 23% Refillable PET 70% Non-refillable PET SOFT DRINKS BEERCAN FILLINGS FOR BEER AND SOFT DRINKS 2011-2015 (MILLIONS OF UNITS)THE LAST OF GERMANY’S MAJOR RETAILERS FINALLY RELISTED CANS ON THEIR SHELVES AFTER A 10-YEAR ABSENCE, MARKING THE COMPLETION OF THE CAN’S IMPRESSIVE REVIVAL52 EUROPEAN CAN MARKET REPORT 2016 COUNTRY REPORTS
