RORY MCILROYAT THE AGE OF 27, IRELANDÕS RORY MCILROY HAS ALREADY WON FOUR MAJOR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS Ð AND IN RIO DE JANEIRO HEÕLL BE AIMING TO BECOME THE FIRST GOLFER TO WIN AN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL FOR 112 YEARSI canÕt overemphasise how important my equipment is, and that goes for my clothing and footwear too. Where my clubs are concerned, I need to feel that everything is 100 per cent going out on the course. I will sometimes have off-days when I play, but I donÕt expect that from my equipment. And IÕd have to say that my driver is my favourite piece of equipment at the moment.ÓAll of the top golfers share many similar attributes. Strength is, of course, really important, as todayÕs golf courses are longer and demand that a golfer has good distance and accuracy from the tee. A good short game to negotiate greens is crucial too, so touch and feel are necessary qualities.ÓWhat separates good golfers from very good ones is mental strength, confidence and belief. To win tournaments at the highest level requires many factors Ð dedication being one of the greatest Ð but quickly learning from mistakes is something I try and apply at all times.ÓI have a goal and strategy going into each round, and I do my best to stick to them. Five hours on the course can be long and tiring, but IÕve been a professional golfer long enough to understand that my focus and concentration remain intact when I stay patient.ÓThere are no downsides to being physically fit. It may not be at the top of every golferÕs agenda, but being fit is very important to me. I no longer see fitness and golf as separate entities, and my days combine the two disciplines almost equally. It has been my belief for some time that my career, and competitiveness, will last much longer if I maintain a good level of fitness.ÓThe Olympic Games Rio 2016 will be a first for me, so IÕll be very excited to get the opportunity to compete for a gold medal for my country. There will be a lot of golfers on top of their game and all hoping to bring home a medal. I canÕt wait to get a good look at the venue and get stuck in!Ó60 OLYMPIC REVIEW ROAD TO RIO
