As part of the Sport for Tomorrow programme – a Japanese government-initiated programme to promote international cooperation through sport – the Japan Sport Council and the Japanese Olympic Committee invited representatives from NOCs in the Oceania region to Tokyo for the 2016 Discovery Camp programme. Representatives were invited to share opinions and discuss best approaches to sports team management so that teams and individual athletes are able to perform at the peak of their abilities at major international sporting events such as the Olympic Games. The programme was held from 28 February to 6 March, and brought together 14 representatives from NOCs in charge of teams taking part in the Olympic Games Rio 2016. “The Discovery Camp was a fantastic opportunity to strengthen networks and partnerships between Japan and countries in the Oceania region,” said Kitty Chiller (below), Chef de Mission of the Australian Olympic Committee. JAPAN WELCOMES OCEANIA NOCS FOR DISCOVERY CAMPSeveral NOCs have announced the winners of their IOC Trophies for 2015, under the theme of “Sport and Innovation”.In March, the NOC of Chile revealed that Chilean Olympic Academy President Jaime Agliati had been awarded the IOC Trophy for his travelling museum concept, which is soon to be opened to the public. The aim of the museum is to increase awareness of the Olympic values throughout the country, using an inflatable dome that can hold up to 45 visitors. A 3-D animated film explains the history of the Olympic Games, from antiquity to modern times, and gives information on the participation of Chilean athletes at the Games.The NOC of Czech Republic also announced that it has presented its IOC Trophy to Jaroslav Pollert for devising a unique method that significantly reduced the construction time on a water channel for the canoe slalom events at the Olympic Games Rio 2016.The NOC of Greece, meanwhile, awarded the IOC Trophy to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), in recognition of its important support to the innovative “DIATROFI” (Nutrition) programme, which fights against childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating and healthier dietary patterns.The NOC of Poland also announced that it awarded the IOC Trophy to Prof. Marek Krawczyk at its Annual Gala. IOC Member Irena Szewińska presented the award.NOCS ANNOUNCE IOC TROPHY WINNERSColombian NOC hosts Olympic ConferenceIn March, the Colombian NOC, through its Olympic Academy, hosted the 69th Olympic Conference on the theme of Olympic Agenda 2020. More than 100 students and professors from the Olympic faculties of a number of universities, representatives of regional sports institutions and disabled sports organisations took part, as well as former athletes, NOC President Baltazar Medina and Professor Carlos Eduardo Villegas, who led the debates at the NOC headquarters in Bogotá. The main topics were Olympic Agenda 2020, its 40 recommendations, their implementation and Colombia’s contribution to Olympic Agenda 2020.Salvadoran students introduced to hockeyIn February, as part of the Salvadoran Olympic Academy’s 2016 Olympic schools programme, 200 students from Salvadoreño High School in San Salvador had the opportunity to try hockey for the first time. They learned about the sport while also experiencing the benefits of physical activity and the values of sport, under the direction of Caterina Barale of the Salvadoran Hockey Federation and with the help of the NOC of El Salvador.
