Innsbruck holds a unique position in Olympic history, having hosted the Winter Games twice, as well as the inaugural edition of the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2012. As a result, the city has made continuous use of its world-class Olympic venues. For instance, the Bergisel Stadium Ð the iconic ski jumping venue that hosted the 1964 and 1976 Opening Ceremonies Ð once again welcomed the athletes in 2012, while Patscherkofel and the Olympic Ice Stadium were also used extensively during the 2012 Winter YOG.But the success of the Olympic Winter Games in 1964 and 1976 did not only leave an infrastructural legacy in Innsbruck Ð it also helped establish it as a major tourist destination. Today, the region welcomes visitors for more than 2.6 million annual overnight stays, and the city alone receives approximately five million day visitors per year.OLYMPIC LEGACYELEGANCE ON THE ICE The figure skating events in Innsbruck provided plenty of highlights, with American teenager Dorothy Hamill capturing hearts Ð and the gold medal Ð with her grace and elegance. Great BritainÕs John Curry claimed the menÕs gold medal with a unique combination of technical mastery and artistic expression, while US champion Terry Kubicka became the first person to successfully complete a backflip in competition.MITTERMAIER’S GOLDEN DOUBLEWest GermanyÕs Rosi Mittermaier had never won a major downhill event prior to 1976, but the 25-year-old veteran of two previous Games proved in Innsbruck that experience can count for a lot. She won two of the three Alpine skiing events and almost became the first woman to win all three, only to be beaten to gold in the giant slalom by CanadaÕs Kathy Kreiner.Bobsleigh and luge events were held on the same track for the first time, following the construction of a combined track at the Olympic Sliding Centre in Igls. The success of the track led to an agreement on the construction of future combination tracks that continues to this day.MEMORABLE MOMENTSDID YOU KNOW?MEMORABLE MOMENTSOLYMPIC REVIEW 71OLYMPIC FLASHBACK
