The Tokyo 1964 medals featured a design used since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, which was created by Florentine artist Giuseppe Cassioli and chosen after a competition organised by the International Olympic Committee in 1921. MEDALSAfter receiving a large number of proposals for the official emblem of the Games, the Tokyo 1964 Organising Committee chose a design submitted by Yusaku Kamekura. The design – as seen on the official poster (above) – placed the Olympic rings underneath the emblem of the Japanese national flag, representing the rising sun.
