Lagoon, located in the heart of the city with a spectacular backdrop of mountains, Tijuca National Forest and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. Completing the south zone venues will be the Marina de Glória, which sits on the edge of one of Rio de Janeiro’s biggest leisure complexes at Aterro do Flamengo. The marina will be the hub for the sailing events in the waters of the surrounding Guanabara Bay.Maracana In the north of Rio de Janeiro, the world-famous Maracanã Stadium will stage the Opening and Closing Ceremonies as well as the Olympic football finals. Attached to the iconic stadium complex is the Maracanãzinho, or “Little Maracanã”, which is the traditional home of Brazilian volleyball – the most popular sport in the country after football. The venue was extensively renovated for the 2007 Pan-American Games and will stage the volleyball tournament during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.The Olympic Stadium is also in the Maracanã zone. It is known locally as the “Engenhão” – a reference to the Engenho way for the start and finish of the Olympic marathon, as well as the archery events.Deodoro The final venue cluster is the Deodoro Olympic Park, which will host 11 different Olympic sports. Like Barra, this neighbourhood in the west of the city is being transformed by the construction of four new permanent venues: the Youth Arena, which will host some basketball matches and the fencing section of the modern pentathlon; the Olympic Hockey Centre; the Olympic BMX Centre; and the Olympic Whitewater Stadium. All four venues will form part of the sporting legacy that the Games will leave for the city.The Deodoro Olympic Park, which will be the second biggest cluster of Games venues, is already home to three existing venues – the National Shooting Centre, National Equestrian Centre and Modern Pentathlon Aquatics Centre – and will also contain the temporary Deodoro Stadium, which will host rugby sevens’ Olympic debut as well as the riding and combined sections of the modern pentathlon. A temporary Olympic Mountain Bike de Dentro neighbourhood in which it is located, which in turn takes its name from the sugarcane mills or engenhos built around Rio de Janeiro during colonial times. Built for the 2007 Pan-American Games, the venue will host all of the athletics events as well as a number of football matches.Also located in the Maracanã cluster is the Sambódromo venue, which plays host to Rio’s biggest Carnival parade every year.
