On 31 July, the IOC named Lausanne (Switzerland) as the host city of the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2020. Lausanne, home to the IOC headquarters since 1915 and known as the Olympic Capital, was chosen over Brasov (Romania) during a vote at the 128th IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 71 votes to 10.In line with Olympic Agenda 2020, the Evaluation Commission for the Winter Youth Olympic Games 2020 for the first time focused its assessment of the two Candidate Cities on the key opportunities and risks associated with both bids and on the athletes’ experience. The Commission, chaired by IOC Member in China, Yang Yang, noted that both Lausanne and Brasov were capable of organising the Games. Lausanne was praised in particular for its good use of existing, temporary and demountable venues, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020 sustainability reforms.Lausanne 2020 organisers have proposed 10-19 January 2020 as the dates for the Games. Over 1,000 athletes ranging in age from 15 to 18 are expected to take part. Both YOG Candidate Cities were informed that a review of sports, disciplines and events will take place after the 2nd Winter Youth Olympic Games, to be held in Lillehammer (Norway), in February 2016, and that the overall list of events will be completed approximately three years ahead of the Youth Olympic Games 2020.IOC President Thomas Bach will establish a Coordination Commission to assist Lausanne 2020 with its preparations.Left The Lausanne bid team celebrate the announcement in Kuala LumpurOn 11 August, the IOC announced the list of 15 Athlete Role Models (ARMs) who will support the young athletes going to the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lillehammer. Selected by the International Federations whose sports will be featured at Lillehammer 2016, the list features many sporting legends, including Olympic and world champions. They will play a key role in supporting, mentoring and offering advice to the 1,100 athletes who will be participating in the Games. The ARMs will share their experiences and inspire the athletes to be the best they can be both on and off the field of play.Angela Ruggiero, Chair of the IOC Coordination Commission and USA Olympic ice hockey champion, said: “The ARMs have a wealth of knowledge to share with the young athletes garnered from their successful careers as sportsmen and women, and will be a huge support and comfort to the young athletes, many of whom will be experiencing their first multi-sport international competition.”On 16 June, the IOC announced two new ambassadors for the Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Lillehammer 2016. Slopestyle snowboarder Silje Norendal (NOR) and New York Rangers ice hockey player Mats Zuccarello (NOR) will join fellow ambassadors Lindsey Vonn (USA) and Kjetil Jansrud (NOR) in inspiring athletes and young fans to get active and be part of the second edition of the Winter YOG taking place in February 2016. In August, South Korean figure skating legend Yuna Kim was also named a YOG ambassador for Lillehammer 2016.
