OLYMPIC REVIEW 19SAMPLEThe Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has announced the names of 13 members of its Athletes’ Commission, including Olympic champions Marianne Vos (Netherlands) and Anna Meares (Australia). For the first time, the members have been elected directly by their peers. They will represent the UCI’s eight official disciplines up until 2017. The Commission’s President will be appointed during its first meeting later this year and will be co-opted onto the UCI Management Committee.On 24 June, the UCI also unveiled its new brand identity to help modernise the image of the organisation. A new logo is central to the rebranding. The distinctive rainbow stripes – which are synonymous with the UCI world champions – are a prominent feature of the new logo, reflecting the heritage of the UCI and its world championships. This is only the second time in 115 years that the UCI has revamped its logo.The fourth edition of the International Judo Federation’s (IJF) “Judo Educational Journey” has been travelling through Oceania. Organised jointly by the IJF, the Oceania Judo Union and IJF President Marius Vizer, the journey has taken in four countries and territories (Australia, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and New Caledonia). Led by IJF Media and Judo for Peace Director Nicolas Messner, the journey was launched in Wollongong (Australia) on the occasion of the National Championships. In Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea, judo demonstrations were held at the university, high schools and a local club. In Vanuatu, which was devastated by a cyclone in March this year, the IJF will provide equipment to help the national federation. Three judo sessions were held for judokas aged between three and 30 in the capital, Port-Vila. This decision was taken with immediate effect by delegates from national associations at their annual Congress in Ghent (Belgium).Get Into Rugby programme flourishingWorld Rugby has announced that, with over 7.2 million players getting active across 120 national member unions, the “Get Into Rugby” mass participation programme attracted a record 460,000 children in 2014 and could reach 600,000 in 2015. With a target of one million new players by the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro (where rugby sevens will make its debut), over 300,000 children have already taken part in this programme in the first five months of 2015. As part of the International Ski Federation’s (FIS) Development Programme, a training camp for South America has been held in Cerro Castor (Argentina). Eighteen athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Mexico and Turkey took part and prepared for the next skiing season through intensive training sessions on snow and grass. The FIS has also confirmed that the fifth edition of World Snow Day will be held on 17 January 2016.International Triathlon Union (ITU) President and IOC Member Marisol Casado was the guest keynote speaker at the first forum for Women and Sport in Japan, organised jointly by the ITU’s Women’s Committee, the Japan Triathlon Union, the Japanese Olympic Committee, and the Kyoritsu Women’s University, an affiliate university of Tokyo 2020.The theme of the forum was “The Value and Power of Sport for Women”, and it focused on encouraging women to lead active lifestyles and explore the enriching effects of sport. The forum was also linked to the “Sport for Tomorrow” programme, which is being run by the Japanese government with a focus on international cooperation through sport. In addition, Marisol Casado met Hakubun Shimomura, Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, who is also the minister responsible for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
