Mexico City 1968 marked the last time that the traditional
Olympic medal design – in use since 1928 – was used
(a new reverse was designed for the Olympic Games Munich
1972). The obverse features an inscription commemorating the
Games and an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory,
clutching a palm in her left hand and triumphantly raising a
crown in the air with her right. An Olympic champion being
carried by a crowd adorns the reverse of the medal.
The result of a collaboration
by three artists – Pedro Ramírez
Vázquez (an architect and
President of the Organising
Committee), Mexico’s Eduardo
Terrazas and American Lance
Wyman – the emblem of the
Olympic Games Mexico City
1968 cleverly incorporated the
five Olympic rings into the year of the Games. Its geometric
style took inspiration from two sources: the patterns and
artwork of the indigenous Huichol people and 1960s op art.
