The Official Film of the Olympic
Games Rio 2016, directed by
Breno Silveira and entitled “Days
of Truce”, had its world premiere
on 3 November as part of the
Tokyo International Film Festival.
The documentary focuses on
the Brazilian experience of
hosting the Games and includes
interviews with people from all
walks of life who contributed to
the Games’ success, from taxi
drivers to Popole Misenga,
a member of the first Refugee
Olympic Team. The film is
available to watch on the Olympic
Channel. The screening helped
to generate enthusiasm and
promote the Olympic spirit
among Japanese audiences,
as Tokyo prepares to write a
new chapter in Olympic history,
56 years after hosting the
Olympic Games in 1964.

The countdown to the Olympic
Games Tokyo 2020 reached
a significant milestone on 28
October, which marked 1,000
days to go until the start of the
Games of the XXXII Olympiad.
The Tokyo Organising
Committee of the Olympic and
Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020)
celebrated the milestone with a
series of events that ran through
to 29 November.
The programme kicked off
with the “Tokyo 2020 Olympic
Countdown – 1,000 Days to Go”
event in the Japanese capital
on 28 October. This featured
a parade, a special stage
event attended by Olympic
athletes and dignitaries including
Tokyo mayor Yuriko Koike, and
interactive demonstrations of
three sports – 3x3 basketball,
skateboarding and BMX freestyle
– which will all be debuting at
Tokyo 2020.
“The more people have the
opportunity to participate and feel
involved during the lead-up to the
Games, the stronger Tokyo 2020’s
legacy will be,” said Tokyo 2020
spokesperson Masa Takaya.
“We want the 2020 Games
to inspire new generations to
practise sport more and to live by
the Olympic values. Our various
programmes have allowed us to
engage with five million people
already and we will intensify our
efforts over the next 1,000 days.”
Attending the inaugural
Together4Climate event in Paris,
the mayors of the two host cities
for the Olympic Games 2024 and
2028, Anne Hidalgo (Paris) and
Eric Garcetti (Los Angeles), signed
a Memorandum of Understanding
on Olympic cooperation. Paris and
Los Angeles will build on their
relationship to work closely with
each other and share best
practices in sustainability,
inclusiveness and innovation.
“Mayor Hidalgo and I are united
in our belief that the Olympic
Games are defined by inspiration
and transformation,” said Garcetti.
“Our Games are an opportunity to
work together and to demonstrate
that by addressing our global
challenges at the local level, we
can find sustainable solutions that
create jobs, improve public health
and grow our economies.”
Hidalgo, Garcetti and the
10 other mayors who sit on the
C40 steering committee signed
the C40 Fossil-Fuel-Free Streets
Declaration, pledging to make
their cities largely zero emission
by 2030, a goal that Tokyo, the
host city of the Olympic Games
2020, is also working towards.
