On 7 July, International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia President Sheikh Saud Al Thani welcomed representatives from the 10 Southeast Asian basketball federations (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) to Singapore for the first-ever workshop to determine key activities in the region for the next three years.Joined by Southeast Asia Basketball Association President and FIBA Central Board Member Erick Thohir, Al Thani congratulated FIBA for its foresight in opening an office in Singapore to support the development of basketball in this dynamic region.Meanwhile, Thohir said: “These 10 Southeast Asia countries have a combined population of over 600 million people with a strong interest in sports. Therefore basketball can increase its popularity, with FIBA assisting the National Federations in this region to have a better structure and deliver high-quality training programmes.”Building on the success of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Quality Programme for Hockey Turf, the FIH has launched new standards for hockey turfs, hockey fields and “Hockey5s” courts. Available as downloads on the FIH website, the new standards mark another milestone in the development of high-quality, sustainable hockey facilities.“We believe that the long-term success of our sport lies in the quality of hockey facilities around the world,” said FIH Director of Sport and Development David Luckes.“These new specifications will help us progress the development of hockey facilities with the goal of ensuring the next generation of hockey players, the future of our sport, will be able to learn and develop their hockey skills in safe and reliable environments.”FIH PUBLISHES NEW STANDARDS FOR FACILITIESBelow FIBA will provide new training programmes for the Southeast Asian teams FIBA WORKSHOP FOR SOUTHEAST ASIAN FEDERATIONS FIS stage development programme campFrom 9 to 29 July, the International Ski Federation (FIS) Development Programme Alpine Training Camp was staged in El Colorado, Chile. The programme, which saw 16 athletes from Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico prepare for the winter season alongside experienced coaches, included intensive on-snow training and dryland training sessions to focus on speed, muscular endurance and coordination.The athletes were able to showcase their skills by participating in FIS races in El Colorado on 27-28 July.Tokyo to host 2019 UIPM World Cup FinalOn 27 July, the Union Inter nationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) announced that Tokyo (Japan) will host the 2019 UIPM World Cup Final, which will also double up as an official test event for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.The competition will take place in June 2019, allowing the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to create a “dress rehearsal” for the Games, where modern pentathlon will take place for the first time in a single venue – Tokyo Stadium – that can host all of the events in one day.NEWS IN BRIEFAbove Hockey turfs, fields and “Hockey5s” courts will all be developed as part of the FIH’s new standards20 OLYMPIC REVIEW
