On 13 September 2017, almost exactly two years after the Candidature Process officially began, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will elect the host city of the 2024 Olympic Games at the 130th IOC Session in Lima (Peru). The two Candidate Cities – Los Angeles and Paris* – both have a strong Olympic heritage, with Los Angeles hosting the Games in 1932 and 1984, and Paris in 1900 and 1924.The candidates for the 2024 Olympic Games are the first to receive the full benefits of Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement. The Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms put forward some fundamental changes to the Candidature Process, including the addition of the Athlete Experience as a key criterion; a stronger emphasis on sustainability and legacy; and more flexibility for cities to design Games that address local needs.SPOTLIGHT ON THE CANDIDATE CITIES 2024WITH THE HOST CITY OF THE 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES SET TO BE ELECTED IN SEPTEMBER, THE TWO CANDIDATE CITIES – LOS ANGELES AND PARIS – DESCRIBE IN THEIR OWN WORDS HOW SUSTAINABILITY AND LEGACY PLAY A KEY PART IN THEIR PLANSBoth LA 2024 and Paris 2024 reflect these changes by making extensive use of existing and temporary venues, and by maintaining a strong focus on sustainability and legacy. The IOC Evaluation Commission Olympic Games 2024 recently completed its official visits to the Candidate Cities, spending three days in both cities – 10-12 May in Los Angeles, followed by 14-16 May in Paris. The detailed discussions and venue visits represented a continuation of a dialogue that began well over a year ago, and one of the primary goals of the visits was to learn more about the value proposition of each candidature. The Evaluation Commission report will be published on 5 July on olympic.org.Both Candidate Cities will have an opportunity to present their proposals directly to IOC Members, and offer any response to the commission’s report, at the Candidate City Briefing 2024 for IOC Members and Summer Olympic International Federations in Lausanne on 11 and 12 July. Both the report and the briefing will be used to help inform IOC Members ahead of the host city election at the IOC Session in Lima.*Cities are listed in the order of drawing lots by the IOC Executive BoardCANDIDATE CITIES 202460 OLYMPIC REVIEW
