IOC Member Marisol Casado was elected for a third term as President of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) at the 29th Congress on 12 December in Madrid (Spain). Casado was first elected in Madrid eight years ago. “Thank you from the heart for nominating me as President of ITU,” Casado said. “Thank you for believing in my vision, in my leadership, and where I want to take the sport. It is a great honour to be given the responsibility of directing ITU another four years.“I received a great legacy, and we are in a very positive situation at ITU. We’ve done a great job as a team, and we have to keep moving in the same direction. We will think about possible changes and, if needed or if we think changes can improve our sport, we will make those changes. We will do whatever is necessary to keep our sport in the spotlight.” IOC President Thomas Bach, who spoke at the ITU Congress, praised Casado and the ITU for their good governance and sustainability.The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that Great Britain’s Andy Murray and Germany’s Angelique Kerber are the 2016 ITF World Champions, a first for both players. Murray won nine titles in 2016, among them the men’s singles title at the Olympic Games Rio 2016, while Kerber lifted two Grand Slams and won silver in the women’s singles in Rio. The winners will receive their awards at the 2017 ITF World Champions Dinner on 6 June, in Paris (France).Rio 2016 Olympic champions featured heavily among the winners of the 2016 World Rowing Awards, presented by World Rowing (FISA). They included Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinković, named the Male Crew of the Year, and Polish duo Magdalena Fularczyk-Kozłowska and Natalia Madaj, who were the Female Crew of the Year. Recognising the work carried out by the FEI, particularly the integrity and quality of the governance it provides, the award rounded off a successful year for the body, which was praised for the initiatives forming part of its “#TwoHearts: Billy to Rio” Olympic campaign, and the video Hoofloose.IJF launches new refugee programmeAfter launching its first programme in the Syrian refugee camps on the Turkish border in 2015, the International Judo Federation (IJF) has begun a new programme, through its “Judo for Peace” Commission. This is being run in the Maheba refugee camp in northern Zambia, which is home to almost 20,000 refugees from nine African countries, of whom 10,000 are children. These include Faustin, a young Burundian and black-belt judoka living in Maheba, who is the coach of the programme.
