In Melbourne in 1956, the Frenchman won Olympic gold in the men’s sprint, while he also won three successive world titles between 1956 and 1958, as well as two world championship silver medals. ANTONINA SEREDINATwo-time Olympic gold medal-winning sprint canoeist Antonina Seredina (right) has died at the age of 86. While representing the Soviet Union at the Olympic Games Rome 1960, Seredina won the K1 500m, and then teamed up with Mariya Shubina to win the K2 500m, becoming the first woman to claim gold in both events. Eight years later in Mexico City, she returned to the podium in the K2 500m, partnering Lyudmila Pinayeva to a bronze medal.NORBERT SCHEMANSKYThe USA’s 1952 Olympic 90kg weightlifting champion Norbert Schemansky has died, aged 92. Having won a silver medal at the Olympic Games London 1948, the gold in Helsinki four years later, and bronze medals in 1960 and 1964, Schemansky became the first weightlifter to win four Olympic medals. The American was also a three-time world champion, and on 28 April 1962, at the age of 37 years and 333 days, became the oldest man in the history of weightlifting to set an official world record whenhe snatched 164kg.PHILIP GUISHARDPhilip Guishard, a leader in Bermudian sports administration and the secretary general of the Bermuda Olympic Association, has died at the age of 74. As well as presiding over the Bermuda Track and Field Association, he helped administrate the Island Games in Bermuda in 2013 and served as Chef de Mission for the Bermuda team at the Pan-American Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.Norwegian cross-country skier Harald Gršnningen has passed away, aged 81. Gršnningen was a star of the sport in the 1960s, winning Olympic gold in the 15km and 4x10km relay at the Olympic Winter Games Grenoble 1968, to add to the two silver medals he won in Innsbruck in 1964, and the silver he won in Squaw Valley in 1960. He was also part of the Norwegian relay team who were crowned world champions in 1966. He received Norway’s prestigious Holmenkollen medal in 1961.
