Bolt was trailing slightly as he received the baton on the final leg, but soon stormed ahead to bring the Jamaicans home ahead of Japan, who set an Asian record to win silver.“There you go, I’m the greatest,” Bolt declared after winning his ninth Olympic title. “As long as we got the baton around, it was never in doubt.”His joy was mirrored by Spanish badminton star Carolina Marín, who became the first European to claim the women’s singles title with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over India’s PV Sindhu. “I’m very excited,” said Marín. “It is amazing that my dream has come true. I just had to believe in myself.”There was also some late-night drama in the taekwondo, where Cheick Sallah Cissé clinched Côte d’Ivoire’s first-ever Olympic gold medal with a last-second head kick to beat Great Britain’s Lutalo Muhammad in the men’s -80kg final.DAY14RIO 2016OLYMPIC REVIEW 41
