She discusses the topic of ‘Flesh’ on page 62.SUSANNA CLARKESusanna Clarke is an arts and lifestyle journalist who has edited NADFAS Review for over three years. On page 32 she explores the legacy of De Stijl, a Dutch art movement that will be 100 years old next year.TIM ECOTTTim Ecott has written several books and has lived and worked in South Africa for many years, including time spent as a reporter for the BBC World Service. He explores South African culture on page 60. We greatly value the support provided by our dedicated Chief Executive and staff at NADFAS House (just 17 of them), but otherwise NADFAS depends on volunteers. Fortunately there’s a wealth of talents within our 92,000+ membership, but in recent years there has been limited interest in becoming a Trustee. With a high number of statutory Trustee retirements in May 2017, there will be a signifi cant number of places to be fi lled. It’s important we ensure a Trustee Board with the skills to steer NADFAS into the future and keep us true to its values; is this the year you could offer your expertise in that capacity? If you would like to know more, there will be Discovery Days at NADFAS House on January 24 and February 9; I hope one of them will be convenient for you and very much look forward to meeting you then.Meanwhile, we continue with the rebranding of NADFAS to make us more visible and ensure our voice is heard in the Arts world. Jane Wentworth Associates, which has been commissioned with this project, has spent the past months consulting members and staff in order to fully understand our organisation and its values before making any suggestions. So far they have had strong feedback, with over 60% responding that a name change is necessary. JWA are still welcoming comments on any of their fi ndings; to add your voice, please email: nadfas@janewentworth.com.Society committees are at the heart of NADFAS. It is most exciting, therefore, that there is a new category in the Marsh Awards for Volunteering specifi cally aimed at committees making a signifi cant difference over the course of the year. This could be changes within the Society itself, or in the wider community, and we look forward to seeing your nominations (see page 6). With a continuing determination to increase the practical support for Societies, there are two new sources for funding available from NADFAS House. The Research and Development Fund is to help Societies reach new audiences and create new collaborations. Meanwhile, Trustees recognise that some Societies are experiencing recruitment or retention diffi culties. In some cases these could be alleviated by simple, but fundamental, changes in the way they operate. The Sustainability Fund has been set up in order to provide Societies with a ‘cushion’ against any potential losses incurred as a result of making a positive change to ensure their continuing survival. To learn more, please talk to your Area Chairman or call James Wilkins or Jo Martin on 020 7430 0730 (ext. 239/228). As the festive season approaches, I send my good wishes to all of you as we look forward to an exciting year ahead.June RobinsonNational ChairmanContributorswww.nadfas.org.uk NADFAS REVIEW / WINTER 2016 3FOREWORD
