Help others to reach their potentialThe Patricia Fay Memorial Fund was set up in memory of NADFAS founder Patricia Fay. It gives grants of up to £5,000 to match-fund Area or Society projects with an arts or heritage focus, especially those that reach new audiences, or promote well-being, fun and friendship. Over the summer, West Wales DFAS supported an innovative Pembrokeshire community project that delivered on all of these points. Thanks to an additional contribution from the Patricia Fay Memorial Fund, the Society was able to deliver four workshops for groups of youngsters that focused on observing and drawing the local landscape. Led by artist Lizzy Stonhold as part of a project called ‘Coast Lines’ in Fishguard and Goodwick, the workshops looked at identity within the landscape and community. Lizzy’s experimental approach allowed the drawings to be manipulated and explored, using the pictures to create components of a story, eventually arriving at a surreal interpretation. Cathy Arthur from the West Wales DFAS Young Arts team, commented: “Drawing outdoors is amazing; the wind, sun, mist and rain were not our enemies, we embraced them and had a go.”The ‘Coast Lines’ project won the 2016 The Big Draw Founder’s Award. Kate Mason, Director of The Big Draw, said that the judge’s choice was unanimous, because the project brought so much fun and creativity. It has also been archived by Welsh Heritage as part of the ‘People’s Collection Wales’. • If you'd like to leave a legacy to the Patricia Fay Memorial Fund, see the details in the box, left. ■Above: Artist Lizzy Stonhold worked with pupils in workshops Right: Examining one of the large drawings from the project West Wales coastal project draws a community togetherA bequest towards the work of NADFAS volunteering and grant giving will help bring art and heritage skills to a new generation. For a confi dential discussion about leaving a legacy to NADFAS, contact Chief Executive Florian Schweizer on 020 7430 0730.
