All NADFAS-accredited Lecturers have been through a rigorous selection process and are leading experts in their fi eld. The quality of our monthly lectures is the special feature that binds NADFAS Societies together. A gathering as much social as intellectual, each lecture’s exploration of its subject is a chance to explore new viewpoints, discoveries and facts. Sometimes we leave a lecture buoyed by the wonder of a personal artistic discovery; the lecture may provoke compassion or empathy, sometimes heated discussion. Little wonder then that the annual Directory Day is the most popular event on the NADFAS calendar. It is the opportunity for Lecturers new to the Directory to provide a two-minute taster of their style and subject. Existing NADFAS-accredited Lecturers have one minute to introduce new titles. In March this year, representatives from over 300 Societies, including those from abroad, attended the Directory Day in London. After the presentations, Society representatives had the chance to speak to Lecturers face-to-face and book their favourites for future lectures. There was also the chance to select a special lecture to help celebrate the NADFAS Golden Jubilee in 2018.The choice of subjects is quite breath-taking. These days, NADFAS stands for so much more than just decorative and fi ne arts. Our lectures recognise the creative processes in much of our daily life and surroundings, and as a result encompass topics as diverse as literature, manufacturing design, music, dance, architecture and street art. This variety is refl ected in the broad spectrum of volunteering projects in which thousands of members become involved, many in their local communities. Accompanying this issue of the Review is a supplement outlining just a small sample of the volunteer work undertaken by NADFAS members worldwide. Some projects are targeted at small groups; others have a wider scope, but together they mean that the infl uence of NADFAS affects thousands of people. Our Young Arts schemes introduce children to the joys of creativity and help young people develop new skills. Heritage Volunteers work under the guidance of professionals to help preserve important collections in museums and heritage sites. Church Records provide a valuable reference guide to the contents of our churches, often unlocking mysteries along the way; Church Trails introduce children to the wonders of some of the most historically important buildings in their local area.If any of these projects inspires you, please speak to your local Society committee.June RobinsonNational Chairmanwww.nadfas.org.uk NADFAS REVIEW / SUMMER 2016 3FOREWORD
