Lt Col Susan Wright and Sarah Murphy reportAs part of its drive to fi nd new audiences, last October NADFAS worked with the Army Regional Command and Ministry of Defence on a joint initiative. Funded by the Army, the evening event in London combined a NADFAS lecture with an exhibition to showcase the entries of the annual Army Photographic Competition. The Army and Navy Club on Pall Mall offered a unique and fi tting setting for this enjoyable and successful event, which attracted a young and diverse audience. NADFAS-accredited Lecturer Antony Penrose presented a moving account of his mother Lee Miller in his lecture ‘Hand Grenades like Cartier Clips: Lee Miller’s Life and Work in Fashion’ which followed her transition from fashion photographer to war correspondent and combat photographer, covering Images: Cpl Paul Shaw; NADFAS.historic events such as the siege of St Malo and the liberation of Buchenwald and Dachau camps after WW2. The Army Photographic Exhibition is staged each year to not only highlight the work of professional Army photographers, but also to shine a light on the work of British servicemen and women in the UK and abroad. There were interesting synergies between the work of Lee Miller and modern-day military photographers, with the challenges of confl ict echoing across the generations. Without the bravery and dedication of Army photographers, imagery of today’s confl icts would never be captured. Images included not only scenes on operations, but also sporting events, capabilities ranging from fi eld hospitals to engineering equipment, and fi nally the vital support provided in the UK during recent fl oods and after the tragedy at Didcot power station. The evening gave the photographers welcome extra exposure, while the audience had the opportunity to talk to servicemen and women about the images and their experiences. Everyone felt it was a worthwhile evening and NADFAS hopes to fi nd further opportunities to create successful partnership experiences such as this in the future. ■44 NADFAS REVIEW / SPRING 2017 www.nadfas.org.ukPHOTOGRAPHY
