It is with great pleasure that I can tell you the new name for NADFAS will be The Arts Society. We listened and the new name is what you told us you wanted: clear, uncomplicated and immediately describing exactly who and what we are. A new shared name which, along with our shared values, will unite Societies under one brand. Its simplicity is also its strength. It allows us to explore all the arts in the way which best suits us, enabling Societies to retain their individuality but remain connected within one recognisable international identity. The offi cial launch will be at the AGM in Birmingham on 17 May, but we wanted to give you, our members, an early insight into the new look, with help from Jane Wentworth Associates. Our feature on page 8 gives more information, but there will be further updates to come, so do look out for them.New members are vital for an organisation like ours, for they add vitality and fresh ideas that help to keep it current and relevant. The challenge, of course, is how to fi nd them.We have so much to offer, especially now that our defi nition of the arts has such a broad brush. There are many people who would be interested in the cultural and social benefi ts we offer, who haven’t yet discovered us. Remember there is funding available to offer a helping hand to Societies eager to explore new opportunities to reach them. One way of widening our audience is to hold events in tandem with organisations who share our aims. In this issue we consider two examples, one at an exhibition of artwork by serving members of the army (see page 44), and the other during the annual Heritage Open Days festival (see page 38). I have enjoyed many years’ personal involvement with HOD and have seen fi rst hand the difference that NADFAS participation has made to the celebration of local culture.Joining together with our community for a common purpose is rewarding and fun. New members are an added bonus, but what is certain is that by raising our profi le we will continue to show how attractive our organisation is and ensure that it continues to thrive and grow in the future.June RobinsonNational ChairmanContributorswww.nadfas.org.uk NADFAS REVIEW / SPRING 2017 3FOREWORD
