Barber Institute of Fine Arts and Winterbourne HouseWe start with a visit to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, one of the world’s fi nest small university museums, with a stunning collection of artworks. A short walk will take you to nearby Arts and Crafts-style Winterbourne House, a rare surviving example of an early 20th-century suburban villa and garden. The house was built in 1903 for John and Margaret Nettlefold. Designed as a small country estate, the house boasted rustic outbuildings and large gardens. Be sure to visit the Herb Garden – a project undertaken by volunteers, led by Birmingham Evening DFAS.Tour 11 Depart 9.30am, return 2pm. Birmingham Museum and Art GalleryThe gallery opened in 1880 when local artist Allen Edward Everitt was appointed Honorary Curator of the Free Art Gallery. In 1944, Sir Trenchard Cox became Director of what was then the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The museum building had been used by the the City Council during WW2, but Cox restored the museum buildings and established it as a leading institution. In 1968 he was the founding President of NADFAS. The Staffordshire Hoard is one of the highlights of the museum.You can choose one of two options at the gallery: 1) The Pre-Raphaelites, with a guided tour of the galleries; or 2) a talk entitled ‘Birmingham History – Birmingham from the 13th century to present day’.
