However, they still struggled to achieve the same status and recognition as their male counterparts. The late 1960s saw the rise of the Feminist Art Movement and a critical re-assessment of the role of women in the art world. In the decades that followed, artists like Lubaina Himid (awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to black women’s art) and photographer Maud Sulter sought to directly challenge the marginalisation of their work. The progress made during this radical period has paved the way today for a new generation of women artists; many of whom, like Cornelia Parker, have gone on to achieve international acclaim for their work. This is not to say that women have fi nally achieved parity; the need for initiatives like ‘Valeria Napoleone XX’ (launched by the eponymous philanthropist, in partnership with the Contemporary Art Society, to acquire work by women for UK collections) and the ‘Max Mara Art Prize for Women’ proves this. Meanwhile, for our part we continue to build on our own legacy in this area, as recent acquisitions testify – including Claire Barclay and Hayley Tompkins, both of whom have represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale. ➤ VISITOR INFORMATION Women Artists: From 1861 to 2015Until March 4, 2017Touchstones Rochdale Address: The Esplanade, Rochdale OL16 1AQwww.link4life.org/centres/touchstones-rochdaleOpen: Tuesday to Saturday 10am–5pmAdmission: FreeInformation for groups: Call 01706 924492 for details if you wish to come as a group.Facilities: Shop, café, local studies centre.
