We’re all passionate about the arts, we know how they enrich our lives and want to share that enthusiasm. That’s why NADFAS wants to focus on looking outwards and being inclusive,” she said. “We approach our Golden Anniversary in 2018 and, of course, there will be a programme of major national events to celebrate this, but we also hope Areas and Societies nationwide will include special events and that these will also be outward-looking and inclusive. “One thing on which I’m sure none of us will be prepared to compromise, however, is the quality of what NADFAS offers. As we approach this milestone, let’s aim to be recognised as the Gold Standard – delivering the best lectures and the highest standards of volunteering and conservation in arts and cultural heritage.” June concluded by thanking the staff of NADFAS House and the Board of Trustees “who work tirelessly, always ensuring we’re true to the core values of our charity.” Two Trustees, Gordon Davies and Penny Hedley-Lewis, have retired, while Julia Charlton-Weedy and Jillie Moss have joined the board. June also emphasised her thanks to everyone who volunteers or is a member of a committee. “Without you NADFAS just could not function. I feel privileged to be Chairman of an organisation with a membership that gives so much.”Wendy Keeble, the outgoing Volunteer Head of Training, gave an insightful talk into the work of the Training team, which is composed of volunteers. Wendy, who is suceeded by Liz Woods, said there have been certain topics that have arisen again and again, such as declining membership and the recruitment of committee members. “We simply have to create more opportunities for people to engage,” she said. “New members are vital for Societies, they are the new energy.” • The 2017 AGM will be held in Birmingham on May 17. To celebrate, West Midlands Area is holding an art competition for sixth-form students from 13 schools, with 11 Societies involved. Entitled Make Your Mark, it is supported by the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts and will culminate with an exhibition at the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham during the AGM. Winners will be announced at an evening event on May 15. See page 30 for more about the AGM. ■NATIONAL AGM www.nadfas.org.uk NADFAS REVIEW / AUTUMN 2016 25 AGM images: Richard Eaton.
