The UK has a long love affair with transportation. From steam trains to the Channel Tunnel, the biplane to the Airbus, two-cylinder engines to hybrid technology, we have a rich history from which to draw. Today, we find ourselves at the beginning of a new chapter, headlined by smart technology, wireless communications and the Internet of Things. This digital revolution will sweep the transport industry, transforming the way people approach travel and the movement of goods. In order to benefit from these changes, the time is now to nurture a new era of innovation. It will require new business models, new incentives and collaboration across the transport industry, academia and government to develop Intelligent Mobility opportunities into commercial solutions. The Transport Systems Catapult’s vision is to create an environment that will make the UK a world leader in transport systems innovation. It has already made a real impact. In its three years of operations, the TSC has begun to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of autonomous vehicle development and improved air and rail travel through programmes such as the Departure Planning Information system and Innovation in Rail Franchising. The TSC has also enabled thought leadership through the application of research such as the Traveller Needs and UK Capability Study and worked tirelessly to link academic research with UK industry. As an independent, neutral, not-for-profit body, the TSC plays a vital role in the future of the transport sector, enabling experimentation and supporting the development of new businesses and technologies which have the potential to improve our transport system. It is a very exciting arena in which to work and I look forward to the Catapult building further success for British companies and British Research and Development institutes.
