Rewind 10 years and you would find a transport industry discussing engine emissions, road widening schemes and ticket prices. Today, Artificial Intelligence, connectivity, smart technology and automation are terms which have become synonymous with the movement of people and goods. As we look ahead, all these things are combining to create an unprecedented opportunity to build a new and sustainable transport system which meets the needs of everyone in society whilst addressing long-standing concerns such as pollution and congestion. The Transport Systems Catapult (TSC) calls this future transport system Intelligent Mobility, and it represents a radical overhaul of the entire transport market. The global market is conservatively forecast to treble to £900bn pa by 2025. The TSC exists to help businesses draw on UK academic and inventive strength and flexible regulatory framework to help address that emerging global market. Smart and connected mobility solutions will be an enabler for the UK government's industrial strategy. The TSC is already helping to change the sector. Since 2013, we have worked alongside industry and government to ensure that significant investment is made into the UK IM Sector. We have collaborated with around 300 organisations to jointly deliver some 150 innovative projects, including the high-profile LUTZ Pathfinder self-driving pod project. Pathfinder has catalysed UK industry interest in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV), generated global publicity worth £110m, and helped ensure the UK is a world leader in autonomous vehicle development. These projects have shown the value of collaborative development and the Catapult’s ability to bring together industry, government and academia to innovate and demonstrate new technology. As we move forward, delivering continued impact will be our priority – building on our successes as we continue to move into new exciting areas, accelerating the growth of UK industry and helping to create a smarter, easier, connected way of moving people and goods.
