It is vital for decision-makers to be able to see the consequences of investments before costly real-world trials take place. The Modelling and Visualisation team is developing ways of accurately modelling real-time data in ways that can be easily manipulated and understood, such as computer models that operate on city-wide scales and show how developments will perform relative to all modes of transport and traffic flows. The TSC is harnessing gaming technologies and immersive 3D experiences to highlight issues that had been previously unconsidered. The team are thought leaders in how to integrate Virtual Reality into a real-world context using the latest visualisation technology in the TSC’s state-of-the-art Visualisation Laboratory (see page 26).The digitisation of transport and the proliferation of smart technology are generating huge amounts of data ‒ much of
it closed, lost, or unusable. The Data Insight team drives the efforts to find and share this data in order to release the value it holds and enhance the UK transport industry capabilities. Where commercially sensitive data cannot be easily shared, opportunities to coordinate across the sectors are often left unexplored. This is where the unique and independent position of the TSC is invaluable, providing a safe and trustworthy advisor to create protocols on how companies should collect, store, mine and interpret data. In 2017, the TSC will launch the IM Data Hub. The hub will contain datasets such as detailed mapping grids, Mobile Telephony, national roadworks, emissions, haulage journeys and more ‒ for a 12-month period for the UK. As a trusted independent organisation,
the TSC has specific permissions to combine these datasets from multiple providers
for the first time. This will allow partners
to create new and innovative solutions powered by data. CAPABILITY TEAM10IMAGINE
