GREEN FREIGHT 109“ GOVERNMENTS AT THE IMO’S MARINE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION COMMITTEE HAVE APPROVED MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR SHIPS TO RECORD AND REPORT THEIR FUEL CONSUMPTION”actively supporting two major programmes to help improve shipping’s carbon footprint. The first is the exciting GloMEEP project, formally designated “Transforming the Global Maritime Transport Industry towards a Low Carbon Future through Improved Energy Efficiency”. IMO is executing this innovative Global Environment Facility (GEF)-funded GloMEEP project in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and delivering the project through ten lead pilot countries. The second is an innovative four-year €10million European Union-funded programme that will see IMO establish a global network of Maritime Technology Cooperation Centres (MTCCs) in developing countries to help limit and reduce GHG emissions from their shipping sectors. There is no doubt that the Paris Agreement has placed increased scrutiny on IMO’s work to address greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and thereby contribute to the global imperative to tackle climate change. IMO is playing a major role in ensuring that the spirit of the Agreement is translated into tangible and lasting improvements in shipping, an industry which is indispensable to the world’s economy - we can be pleased with our progress so far. ■ABOUT THE AUTHORKitack Lim was elected Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization by the 114th session of the IMO Council in June 2015 for a four-year period beginning 1 January 2016.
