20112012201320142015333164282957293059303161323163With more than 64 billion beverage cans filled across the continent, 2015 proved to be another record-breaking year for the European beverage can market. Compared with 2014, there was an increase of 1.2 billion cans, equating to year-on-year growth of 1.9%.Fillings of soft drinks remained vibrant across Europe, with an overall increase of 4.4% when compared with 2014, coupled with an increase in pack share for cans. In particular, soft drinks fillings in Germany were up 19.4% year-on-year, as the country’s can market continues to bounce back following the introduction of a deposit system for one-way containers in 2003, which had initially seen cans all but disappear from retail shelves. Impressive growth was also seen in Eastern Europe, where soft drinks fillings jumped by 9.8%, with all countries in that region showing positive increases, and the popularity of energy drinks proving to be a driving force. Indeed, the energy drink category continues to be an important driver for soft drinks fillings across Europe, with the addition of larger can formats successfully complementing the traditional 250ml format in this category. From 2014 to 2015, consumption of energy drinks across Europe increased by 6% and now almost two in every three litres of energy drinks are sold in cans. Overall, the soft drinks category now accounts for more than half of all beverage can fillings in Europe.Beer can fillings in Western Europe also continued positively, showing another year of growth, while a small decline in Eastern European beer fillings was tempered by a rise in market share for beverage cans against other pack formats. With the absence of a major sporting event in 2015, such as the Olympic Games or the FIFA Football World Cup, the positive growth in can fillings across Europe is a clear sign that both brand owners and consumers are increasingly selecting the beverage can as their preferred pack of choice, whether that is for beer or soft drinks.EUROPETHE EUROPEAN BEVERAGE CAN MARKET ENJOYED ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING YEAR IN 2015, WITH FILLINGS INCREASING BY 1.9%Source: BCMEIMPRESSIVE GROWTH WAS SEEN IN EASTERN EUROPE, WHERE SOFT DRINKS FILLINGS JUMPED BY 9.8%, WITH ALL COUNTRIES IN THAT REGION SHOWING POSITIVE INCREASES, AND ENERGY DRINKS PROVING TO BE A DRIVING FORCE 18.1% Austria/Switzerland 15.6% UK 11.3% Spain 10.% France 7.9% Netherlands 6.4% Turkey 6.1% Italy 4.7% Germany 4% Poland 3.3% CEE 3.3% CIS/Russia 2.3% Denmark 2% Belgium 1.7% Greece 1.6% Portugal 1.4% Sweden 0.2% Finland 0.1% Norway SOFT DRINKS BEERCAN FILLINGS FOR BEER AND SOFT DRINKS, 2011-2015(BILLIONS OF UNITS)BEER* CAN FILLINGS SHARE BY COUNTRY, 2015SOFT DRINKS CAN FILLINGS SHARE BY COUNTRY, 2015 14.4% UK 13.3.% CIS/Russia 12.7% Poland 10% Spain 8.2% Germany 7.2% CEE 6.8% Netherlands 5.5% France 4.1% Finland * Includes FABs, cider and wine 3.3% Denmark 3% Sweden 2.4% Belgium 2.3% Austria/Switzerland 2.2% Turkey 1.4% Greece 1.4% Norway 1.1% Italy 0.5% Portugal42 EUROPEAN CAN MARKET REPORT 2016 COUNTRY REPORTS
